A dental procedure isn’t something that we usually look forward to. The six-month teeth cleaning, however, is the exception. What’s not to like, right? You go to your dentist’s office, you’re greeted with a smile and a “how are you doing” by the friendly receptionist and you have time to sit back and enjoy a cup of coffee or a soft drink and then you see the hygienist.
Before she begins the procedure your hygienist may ask about your family, if you’re looking forward to vacation plans, etc. After exchanging pleasantries she will do a preliminary exam of your teeth just to make sure there are no obvious problem areas.
Before she can clean your teeth your hygienist will need to remove the tartar that has hardened onto the tooth enamel. This will involve some scraping with a specifically designed dental tool. Most people find this to be the most uncomfortable part of the procedure. Ironically, the need for scraping could be eliminated or at least lessened by stepping up your daily routine of home care so that plaque doesn’t have a chance to build up and turn to tartar.
The last and best part of the teeth cleaning process is the polishing. You get to choose your favorite flavor polish and you go away with a refreshing taste in your mouth and a renewed sense of self-confidence knowing that your smile is as bright as can be.
